Pemmican
Pemmican was one of the great travel foods of the North American frontier — a compact mixture of dried meat and rendered fat that could last for months and provided enormous energy for explorers and fur traders.
Modern trail food often relies heavily on sugar and starch, but pemmican offers a very different approach: extremely calorie-dense, stable, and naturally low in carbohydrates.
The traditional versions were designed for survival rather than flavor, but with good meat and proper seasoning it can be surprisingly enjoyable.
Endurance Athletes and low-carb fuel
Historically, foods like pemmican were valued because they provided enormous energy in a compact, stable form. Modern endurance athletes often rely heavily on carbohydrate-based foods such as energy gels and granola bars, but some researchers and endurance athletes have suggested that the body can sustain long-duration activity using fat as its primary fuel source when adapted to a ketogenic diet. This remains an area of ongoing debate, but it illustrates why foods like pemmican may have practical uses today for athletes.
